Motivation is a sister of passion. It is said of passion that one “either has it, or doesn’t”. But it is not true that one is either born with it or without it. Motivation grows in us as we are convinced, and we are convinced out of a sense of our convictions or what it is we really believe. This is why we can say that motivation is a sister of passion as they are each born out of a convinced mind / heart that what we are pursuing is of great value and is not an end in itself. Your plan to start a real home based internet business needs to be rooted in this basic soil or you may wind up like me after thirty years in business. Motivation means you are moved to action. You cannot be truly motivated and stand still. The essence of motivation is rooted in what you truly believe and is evidenced by the fruits of action which conviction has stirred. This is why when one is said to be “self motivated”, it usually refers to the idea that she does not need to be told what to do next. Your motivation will be evident as progress and movement occur without the prodding of anyone else. One of the evidences that one truly desires to start a real home based internet business is the research, study and preparation one does in planning and launching the business. Concentration is thwarted without the motivation which is driven by the conviction of the truth regarding the value of the business to which you have committed yourself. If concentration is muted then you will become distracted and unable to make things happen. One who is motivated, believes in what he is doing. At the very core of your being, you must know that you are not just providing your service or product in order to earn an income, but because you believe it is helpful, needful, essential, powerful, life giving, or whatever best describes your business. You are totally committed to providing high value through you real home based internet business. It may be that you are in a commodity-oriented business (products that are readily available and are sold based on price and demand), and the product itself elicits little passion or motivation. In this case, your method of distribution, or the people who are affected by its use, or the company you represent, or the people with whom you work, are creating the motivations that are resulting from the passions of your heart. When you are founding and establishing your own business, these are some of the very reasons you are doing it. If this is not so, you will find yourself simply doing work which must be done. But I want to challenge you to address larger issues than this. We only answer one small part of the question when considering the financial issues. Of course the business must be profitable and cash flow must be positive. But these are not addressing the issue of motivation and concentration, those characteristics that will drive you when nothing seems to be working or when everyone is telling you to quit. Again, motivation is rooted in what it is you truly believe and is evidenced by the fruits of action which have been stirred by the convictions formed, based on what you really believe. These motivations stirred by your convictions is what will build your real home based internet business. We cannot muster up motivation. Don’t seek to find fulfillment in the outward workings of life. It will last only for a season. If you are currently on a journey to building a real home based internet business, whether it is part-time or full-time or a multi- million dollar conglomerate, seek that which will cause you to do what you need to do without prodding or manipulation. You will find this only when you are sold out to the business to which you have wholeheartedly committed yourself. The E Myth series of books by Michael Gerber is an excellent source on the subject of identifying what your business really is. You may be producing or selling a particular product or service. Gerber causes the reader to consider what business you are actually in. Often that which motivates you to action and promoting your business effectively is something other than the actual product or service. I highly recommend this book as you begin to evaluate or restructure your business as a tool to help you focus on what your true desires are and what the nature of your business really is. MY STORY I was personally involved in a business for over twenty-five years in which I continued to lose interest, beginning about twenty years into it. I didn’t clearly recognize this loss of interest, although it had become evident to those around me. The motivation was no longer present as my passion in the early years was based on the wrong pursuits. I was not really sold on the service we were providing nor the method in which we brought it to the marketplace. Rather, I was focused on creating an income, and building a business - the outward effects of all the activity necessary to bring to market that which is of value and needful but with little understanding of what business I was really in. In the early years, the focus on building to create jobs and providing opportunity for people seemed like a sufficient motivation. When a major downturn in the economy hit ('81-83) I found myself filing for a corporate bankruptcy and I was forced to think these things through more thoroughly. I realized my reasons for being in business were not really aligned with who I was. Yes, keeping people working and providing services for customers was a perfectly legitimate reason for being in business. But these were not the motivating factors so when the hard times came I was not prepared. At that time I drastically changed the nature of my business activity but since I had been motivated by this outward effect rather than an inner drive born out of the passions of my heart, then the motivation finally dried up about ten years later. I ultimately left the business I had been involved in for thirty years because I had allowed it to become a mundane job of simply providing product and service to customers who did in fact need and appreciate that which we provided. But since I was operating under the impression that the products and services were the only thing we had to offer the customer, then I had little inner satisfaction from such an arrangement. As you begin to build your real home based internet business get started on the right foot and develop your mission and purpose statement so you think all this through ahead of time. The question, of course, is: Could I not have restructured and redefined the business rather than simply selling it? Yes, one could and often should take such an approach. For me, though, the longings and desires to fulfill my personal goals and to utilize gifts and abilities that I had never had the opportunity to use demanded of me a drastic change. My heart would never have really been in the business I had nurtured for so many years. The verdict in my case was clear to me as I sought to learn new avenues and pursue business ventures in a completely different arena. Before starting your real home based internet business consider the what and the why so you'll have the foundation for the pursuit. When passion fuels your motivation, you become willing to pay whatever price is necessary to reach the level of fulfillment such passion demands.
