Niche or Target Market
Your target market analysis is going to be based on two basic elements: The product or services you are marketing and to whom you are marketing. Niche marketing is a powerful theme throughout the internet at this time drawing upon two important realities:
1. meeting the needs of the humans who come to your ad, article or web page and
2. giving the search engines what they want to provide to humans – good, valuable content.
Niche marketing is finding very narrow niche areas within which to market based on your own personal experience, knowledge and personality. You will develop this into your unique selling proposition.
One very serious consideration is the use of the keywords in your niche. This free video series will provide you help in assessing the keywords in the niche you choose:
Buyer Keywords in Your Niche
The product or service you are marketing will dictate to some extent how to develop your target market analysis but not all that much. If, for instance, you are doing affiliate marketing then it is highly likely that your approach will be more web 2.0 then it will be purchasing ad placements because you will be leading people to a product or service based on your recommendation.
However, if you thoroughly understand adwords and keyword research then maybe you would choose to pay for advertising. The idea behind paid advertising is quite simple – generate more net income than the ads cost and do this as much and as often as possible. If $1 goes in and $1.50 or $2 or $5 comes out then go for it!
The point is you need to develop your own target market analysis that works for you, then implement it wholeheartedly. No one else can do this for you no matter what you read or are told online. You simply must have a method of generating leads and securing customers. This is the essence of your business. You are responsible for this so you must develop a target market analysis that works for you by focusing on your own uniqueness and your own unique selling proposition.
So first decide on how you will be marketing – paid advertising or web 2.0 and then put together an target market analysis that will generate leads AND income. Remember you can have as many folks as you want come to your site or read your articles but if you do not generate income then it will just be a hobby. And that may be fine as this might fulfill your own personal goals. I have a friend who spent a lot of time building a site (www.HeartLike Water.com) because all he wants to do is share his meditative thoughts to those who may need to go “a little deeper in life”. He loves it, it works for him (he does have one DVD that he makes available for sale).
Guidelines for Pursuing Niche Marketing:
What unique talent do you have?
What do you know more about than anyone else you know?
What do you have fun learning about or experimenting with?
Do you enjoy traveling and are you free to travel? Can you write about your trips?
Have you taken specialty courses in a given subject matter?
Do you enjoy teaching? Writing? Communicating? Leading? Helping?
What is your unique selling proposition?
Your USP
In essence what you are doing during this process of developing your target market analysis is forming your USP (unique selling proposition). This is what you will be marketing, that is, who you are and/or what it is you in particular have to offer the world via the internet. Answering the question: What is my USP, my particular unique selling proposition? Causes you to focus on that which sets you apart from everyone else; that which makes you different; why someone would want to buy from you in particular. You must be demonstrably different, very unique, standing out from among the crowd. Only you can form this because you know you and your product or service better than anyone else. This will then become the core of your internet marketing plan.
The process of developing your USP will take you deep down within your soul to know who you are and what benefits your product will bring to the world. It will cause you to look at the product or service you are providing and list out why people do or do not purchase, what are the problems with this product or service (in the minds of those considering the purchase)? Why might they not be willing to make the purchase? What is it you can do differently to solve those problems? How can you stand out from the crowd?
For instance part of my uniqueness is that I make myself available to talk live and in personto really interested folks, find where they are in their business and online experience and then provide specific direction as to what they should do next to start and build a profitable online business. So, beyond the clear, specific and practical information I provide to anyone who takes it in these pages, I primarily help those who are really ready to go but just need a little direction to get over the hump.
Now, ultimately what you will do with your USP is to create a headline for your offer, make the offer, provide an ironclad guarantee and then stay in touch with those folks who do become customers. The totality of these will form the essence of your target market analysis and will clearly describe your unique selling proposition.
One final note because I’ve mentioned the writing part of developing your niche market. The writing is only necessary if you are using Web2.0 marketing (see previous page. You may decide to use paid advertising.
Free advertising
The second concern many have if using Web 2.0 is the actual writing part of it, but you can simply use contract writers by using elance or a service like it if you don’t enjoy the writing aspect. Focusing on your strengths and resources (leveraging yourself) is a big part of starting and building an online business. And is actually a pretty important part of your target market analysis See my book excerpt on this:
